Jis įsimintinas todėl, kad pirmą kartą surengtas ne graikų žemėje. Tikras Niujorko maratonas pirmą kartą surengtas 1976 m. Tai pats masiškiausias maratonas pasaulyje. 1999 m. finišą pasiekė 31 785 bėgikai. 2000 m. šį maratoną žiūrėjo 2 mln. žiūrovų.
